Our hero's name is Ralf. He is known to some as Ralf the Runt. Ralf was born a bastard, cast off and forgotten by parents he never knew, left on the front step of a local parish. When he was 15, he'd had enough and ran off from the parish, only to run out of supplies and fall into the servitude of Lady Matilda.
